The Healthy and Connected Communities Team (HCCT), were very busy in 2023, working with our three communities to bring their activities to life!
Here are a few BIG actions which we have now delivered!
- Snorkel and Water Safety Program
We are thrilled to have partnered with the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre and Scubabo Dive to deliver 15 sessions across our three communities. Over 180 students jumped in the water to participate, with a huge highlight of Leopold Primary School participating in a grade 5 excursion and St Leonards delivering a grade 5 & 6 school excursion and after school sessions.
- Walk, Ride & Scoot – National Ride2School Day & Ride2School Program
Over 1000 students from the 3 communities participated in a whole of school active travel campaign, encouraging students to walk, ride, or scoot to school.
Over 400 ‘walk, ride, scoot’ posters were submitted and over 600 students joined in for a smoothie bike! These communities will continue to work on active travel within their school environment.
- Learn to Skate Program – YMCA All Aboard
We partnered with the YMCA All Aboard team to deliver a series of beginner Learn to Skate sessions for children in the Northern Bellarine (St Leonards & Portarlington). Approximately 130 local children aged 4 – 12 years participated in this program across seven sessions.
We are now continuing to work with our three communities building on these action areas. We are pleased to announce that two communities recently received a 2023 Landcare grant to continue their Snorkel and Water Safety Program in 2024 – with a stronger focus on outdoor environment and education through the support from Bellarine Catchment Network.
