16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. Three decades on, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a widely recognised global campaign that encourages action to end gender-based violence. During this time, organisations and individuals from around the world raise awareness that men’s violence against women is a fundamental violation of human rights.

Everyone deserves to be safe, equal and respected. But family violence and violence against women continue to exist across Victoria. More than 1 in 4 women have experience intimate partner violence since the age of 15. On average, a man in Australia kills his female partner every 9 days. 95% of all victims (regardless of gender) experience violence from a male perpetrator. 1 in 4 Australian young people have experienced child sexual abused before age 18. It doesn’t have to be this way – violence is preventable (Respect Victoria, 2023)

16 Days of Activist against Gender-Based Violence starts on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ends on 10 December (Internation Human Rights Day) each year.

BCH is a great supporter of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and look forward to raising awareness throughout the campaign.  We are also an active member of Respect 2040, a regional partnership of organisations, local governments, agencies, educational institutions and community groups working together to end violence against women in the Barwon South West.

To mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gendered-Based Violence campaign this year, the Respect 2040 partnership is hosting a 3-part webinar series. The webinars will focus on gendered impact of disasters, engaging men and boys to end violence, community driven change and what it means to be an active bystander.

Webinar Details – Details of all three webinars and how to register can be found HERE.
